WACO 1993

I was in my twenties. Mount Carmel Center outside Waco, Texas, headquartered the Apocalyptic sect of the Branch Davidians, an offshoot of the Davidian Seventh-Day Adventist Church led from 1988 to 1993 by prophet David Koresh, born Vernon Wayne Howell.

An affidavit filed by delivery driver David Aguilera with allegations against the sect of stockpiling illegal weapons and allegedly converting AR-15 semi-automatic rifles to fully automatic rifles M-16-like motivated the issue of a search warrant of Mount Carmel Center to the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms).

Besides, there were suspicions of sexual abuse and misconduct behind the walls of the compound. Koresh might be committing statutory rape by taking multiple underage brides as young as twelve or thirteen years old. As it normally happens with these sects, the leader advocated polygamy for himself and celibacy for his male followers, whose wives he took for himself only, fathering many children (up to 15).

On February 28, 1993, date of the search warrant execution, a gunfight started upon entering the compound. Four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians died as a result. Such events prompted the involvement of the FBI and led to the law enforcement siege of Mount Carmel, Waco.

After a 51-day standoff, on April 19, 1993, the FBI raided Mount Carmel Center compound. The feds launched a tear gas attack, pumping it into the compound with the aid of a M728 Combat Engineer Vehicle, equipped with a battering ram. A fire started and engulfed the compound in flames, whether caused by the FBI incendiary tear gas canisters or ignited at several points by the sect, remains unclear. The Branch Davidians barricaded inside the compound. Seventy-six Branch Davidians, including twenty-five children and two pregnant women died on that day in the blaze or shot down. The medical examiner reported twenty people, including five children under the age of fourteen, had been shot, and a three-year-old had been stabbed in the chest. There is a chance that some of these casualties might be mercy killings by the Branch Davidians trapped in the fire with no escape.

David Koresh, born Vernon Wayne Howell also died there by a gunshot wound to the head. He had taken his name after kings David and Cyrus the Great and had previously defeated and evicted George Roden, son to the founder of the Branch Davidians, in a shootout over leadership of the sect in 1987.

In the aftermath, the Oklahoma City bombing of April 19, 1995, left 168 dead and 680 injured. Its authors, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, vindicated the bloodbath in Waco assault on its second anniversary.
