Jan 1, 2019. New Horizons spacecraft was 4,109 miles (6,628 kilometers) from Ultima Thule and 4.1 billion miles (6.6 billion kilometers) from Earth. The angle between the spacecraft, Ultima Thule and the Sun – known as the “phase angle” – was 33 degrees.

In the Middle Ages, Ultima Thule referred to any place beyond the frontiers of the known world. The Thule Society was a German occultist group founded in Munich right after World War I, named after the mythical northern country in Greek legend. The Thule society sponsored investigations and also the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (DAP; German Workers' Party), which was later reorganized by Adolf Hitler into the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP or Nazi Party). Arrokoth, descubierto en 2014, es un “objeto clásico del Cinturón de Kuiper” (o “cubewano”), que significa objeto que orbita más allá de Neptuno sobre el que éste no tiene repercusión. Los cubewanos, a diferencia de Plutón, no cruzan la órbita de Neptuno.
Arrokoth es la palabra Powhatan para “cielo”. El Powhatan o algonquino de Virginia es una lengua desparecida que hablaba la tribu homónima antes de que sus hablantes nativos adoptaran el inglés en torno a 1790.
Conforme al mito, Thule (mencionado la primera vez por Piteas de Marsella, un navegante y geógrafo griego del s. IV a.C.) era la isla más septentrional existente. En la Edad Media, Ultima Thule se refería a cualquier lugar allende las fronteras del mundo conocido. La Sociedad Thule fue un grupo ocultista fundado en Munich justo después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, nombrado así por el mítico país del norte de la leyenda griega. La Sociedad Thule patrocinó investigaciones y también al Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (DAP; Partido de los Trabajadores Alemanes), que más tarde Hitler reconvirtió en el Patido Nacional Socialista de los Trabajadores Alemanes (NSDAP o Partido Nazi).
